What is The Public?

A gathering place for a community of creative food makers, growers, chefs, entrepreneurs, social organizations, and of course—the public. 

Where will The Public be located?

The Public is located in a 15,000 square foot facility in Central McDougall in the Business Improvement Area of North Edge (10560 107 Street NW), just one block north of MacEwan University downtown.

How will this help my food business? 

The Public solves the many problems facing the food industry by taking some of the initial cost of acquiring a commercially certified space and providing programs to support opportunity and collaboration. Food startups access our network and expertise to scale up their operations and achieve significant growth in local and global markets.

The Public also gathers a community of food lovers, purveyors, and producers, with daily direct access to locally grown and created products, events, and market intelligence.

What kinds of spaces can I rent?
  • Part-time and full-time, equipped kitchens
  • Provincially approved AHS kitchen space
  • Federally approved CFIA kitchen space
  • Storage for dry, cold, frozen food products
  • Retail space to showcase my product
  • Venue to host culinary and community events
How much does it cost? 

Access to The Public will range from $25 per hour to $1,200 per month depending on needs.

What is the Public Offering Box?

The Public Offering Box is a curated selection of products from your favourite local food brands! Each box comes as a different collection and exclusive collaborations to size up or down depending on your household needs or cravings.

Every order supports a local food maker or farmer in our community at a time when small businesses need it most. All current offerings are local to Alberta or BC.

How do I order?

Just click here to select your box, size, and pick up date. You will need a credit card to pay for your order. It’s easy!

When can I order?

Any time! Just choose your pickup or delivery date. Orders will close on Sunday's at 11:59 PM for that week’s box offering.

Do you offer delivery or curbside pickup for my box?

After your order is confirmed, you will be sent an email with directions on how to pick up your order or when it will be delivered.

1. Thursdays at the 124 Grand Market: this will be a walk-up service, you will present your confirmation number to the staff member at the station inside the market.

2. Fridays at the Public: this will be curbside delivery. Phone us at 780-760-9453 or text at 780-860-9453 with your order number and make/model of car. Someone will bring your order out to you!

3. If you chose delivery, we will deliver right to your door on Friday's!

Will the boxes be the same each month?

Not at all! Each month we will be switching up our products based on availability and season. We will also be introducing fun options like guest curators and special add-ons.

Why don’t you have more pick up options?

The Public Offering Box is starting at a capacity in which we can scale. Currently we offer two centrally located pickup spots and are introducing delivery to the July box options! 

We hope to add more options in the future!

What happens if I miss my pickup window?

If your Thursday order is not picked up, it will be held at The Public until the next day (Friday) at 4 PM.

If your Friday order is not picked up and you do not contact us, it will be held at the facility until the following week. Product freshness is not guaranteed at this point. No refunds on abandoned orders.

I picked up my box. What do I do now?

When you pick up your order, you will be asked to quickly inspect the box for any thawing or damages.

Once you pick up your box, please take it home as soon as possible. Do not leave your box in a hot car or outdoors for long periods of time. Once the box is out of our facility or pickup points, we are not responsible for any issues that may occur as a result of mishandling your order.

What about storage and food-handling?

Do not refreeze defrosted meat that is held at room temperature for more than two hours. Meat thawed at refrigerated temperatures can be refrozen within 1-2 days of holding at refrigerated temperatures. Please follow all cooking instructions on vendor packaging for prepared or frozen items. Wash fruits and vegetables, unless otherwise stated.

Can my box be delivered?

Yes! We are opening up delivery starting July 10, 2020. Deliveries will be made on Fridays only between 1 PM-5 PM. Due to capacity, this is a flexible time, so please ensure someone is home or there is a safe place to leave your box! We are not responsible for boxes that are left out too long in heat, overnight or for stolen boxes.

How much is delivery? 
Delivery is $10 if you live within the Anthony Henday (Edmonton). $15 for areas outside of the Henday. Includes: St. Albert, Leduc, Sherwood Park. 

I have an issue with my order

I am a vendor. How do I participate in the Public Offering Box?

If you are a local vendor that makes their own products, please fill out our form here!

Will you be offering non-food products?

Right now, the box only includes food products. We are going to be expanding our offerings as we grow!

Returns and refunds

There are no returns offered on The Public Offering Box. If you have an issue with any of your products, please email us at hello@jointhepublic.com and we will do what we can to accommodate you.

I don’t want a curated box. Can’t I just pick out my own groceries?

At this time we are not offering a “pick and pack” option. But our boxes will change monthly, so if you do not like what we have now just wait a couple of weeks!

What about COVID and sanitation?

Your box is packed in a sanitized, secure facility. There is no food handling on site. All products are prepared and packaged in commercial Alberta Health Services facilities with each individual and orders are filled weekly. Our facility follows a robust set of cleaning procedures including sanitization of all surfaces, boxes, and packaging. Because everything is pre-paid, there is minimal contact!
